Sensory & Body Experiences in Autism and ADHD
Maybe certain sounds feel physically painful. Clothing that other people barely notice may be impossible to ignore. Bright lights can make it difficult to think. You might bump into furniture, crave deep pressure, become nauseated in a moving car, or not realize that you’re hungry until you’re suddenly shaky, irritable, or exhausted.
These experiences are not simply about being “too sensitive.” Our sensory systems continuously receive information from both outside and inside the body, helping the brain understand what is happening around us, what is happening within us, and what our body needs.
Autistic and ADHD adults can experience these signals differently. Some sensations may register intensely, others may barely register at all, and some signals can be difficult to identify or distinguish from one another.
Understanding your sensory profile can help make experiences that once seemed confusing much easier to understand.
We Have More Than 5 Senses
Your Sensory System is more than five senses.
Most of us grow up learning about five senses: sight, sound, smell, taste, and touch. But those are only part of the sensory systems our brains use to understand ourselves and our environment.
We also receive sensory information from inside the body and from systems that tell us where our body is positioned and how it is moving.
These sensory systems work together constantly. When sensory processing differs, everyday experiences can feel dramatically different from one person to another.
EXTERNAL SENSES
Sight
Information coming through my eyes.
Sound
Information coming through my ears.
Touch
Information coming through contact with my skin.
Taste
Information coming through my mouth and taste buds.
Smell
Information coming through my nose.
INTERNAL & BODY-BASED SENSES
Interoception
What is happening inside my body?
Proprioception
Where is my body and how much force am I using?
Vestibular Processing
How is my body moving and oriented in space?
The External Senses
External sensory systems detect information coming from the environment. Autistic sensory processing can involve hyper-responsivity, where sensory input feels unusually intense; hypo-responsivity, where sensory information may not register as strongly; or sensory seeking, where the nervous system actively seeks particular forms of input.
The same person can experience all three patterns depending on the sensory system, environment, stress level, fatigue, and context. Below are some examples..
SOUND
- hearing background sounds other people barely notice
- becoming overwhelmed by multiple conversations at once
- difficulty filtering voices from environmental noise
- distress from chewing, tapping, clocks, appliances, or repetitive sounds
- sudden sounds feeling physically startling or painful
- needing headphones or ear protection
- seeking music, repetitive sounds, or particular frequencies
- difficulty concentrating in noisy environments
SIGHT
- sensitivity to fluorescent lighting
- discomfort from bright sunlight
- visual overwhelm in stores or crowded environments
- difficulty filtering visual clutter
- sensitivity to flashing or rapidly changing images
- noticing visual details other people overlook
- seeking particular colors, lights, patterns, or movement
- becoming exhausted after visually demanding environments
TOUCH
- clothing seams or tags feeling painful
- discomfort with certain fabrics
- difficulty tolerating light touch
- unexpected touch causing a strong reaction
- hugs feeling uncomfortable or overwhelming
- seeking deep pressure
- enjoying weighted blankets
- repeatedly touching preferred textures
- strong preferences around clothing fit
SMELL
- detecting smells other people do not notice
- perfume or cleaning products causing significant discomfort
- becoming overwhelmed in restaurants or stores
- nausea triggered by particular smells
- avoiding environments because of odors
- seeking familiar or comforting scents
TASTE & FOOD TEXTURE
Examples:
- strong food texture preferences
- difficulty combining textures
- sensitivity to temperature
- strong reactions to particular tastes
- preferring predictable foods
- difficulty eating when foods are prepared differently than expected
- seeking intense flavors or textures

Interoception
Understanding What Is Happening Inside Your Body
Interoception is the sensory system that helps us notice and interpret signals originating inside the body. These include hunger, thirst, pain, temperature, fatigue, heart rate, breathing, bladder fullness, gastrointestinal sensations, and many of the physical sensations associated with emotions.
Under-Responsive Interoception
Internal signals may not register strongly enough or may not become noticeable until they are intense.
Examples:
“I didn’t realize I was hungry until I felt dizzy.”
“I don’t notice that I need the bathroom until it’s urgent.”
“I don’t realize I’m exhausted until I physically can’t continue.”
Over-Responsive Interoception
Internal sensations may register very intensely.
Heartbeats, pain, thirst, gastrointestinal sensations, temperature changes, or emotions may feel as though someone has turned up the volume.
Difficulty Discriminating Body Signals
Sometimes the signal is present, but identifying what it means is difficult.
Is this anxiety or hunger?
Am I angry or overstimulated?
Am I sad or exhausted?
Is my heart racing because I’m anxious, excited, overheated, or physically exerted?
Proprioception
Where Is My Body in Space?
Proprioception is the sensory system that tells your brain where your body is positioned and how much force you are using without having to look. It helps you move smoothly, coordinate movement, adjust pressure, and feel grounded in your body.
Under-Responsive Proprioception
Someone may seek stronger input to register their body more clearly.
Examples:
- craving tight hugs or deep pressure
- leaning heavily against furniture
- bumping into objects
- enjoying weighted blankets
- seeking jumping, pushing, pulling, or crashing activities
- using more force than intended
- slamming a door without meaning to
- gripping objects very tightly
Over-Responsive or Difficult Proprioceptive Experiences
Someone may be unusually aware of positioning or find certain body sensations uncomfortable.
This can contribute to:
- feeling awkward or uncomfortable in particular positions
- difficulty judging force
- feeling physically ungrounded
- difficulty coordinating movement
- discomfort with particular forms of touch or pressure
Vestibular
Movement, Balance & Orientation
The vestibular system uses structures in the inner ear to detect movement, gravity, and changes in head position. It contributes to balance, coordination, spatial orientation, and our sense of whether and how the body is moving.
Vestibular Seeking / Under-Responsivity
Someone may seek significant movement to feel regulated:
- rocking
- spinning
- swinging
- pacing
- bouncing
- constantly changing position
- enjoying fast movement
- seeking movement throughout the day
Vestibular Sensitivity / Over-Responsivity
Movement can become overwhelming:
- motion sickness
- dizziness
- discomfort on escalators
- difficulty in elevators
- fear or discomfort on stairs
- feeling disoriented in cars
- difficulty with spinning or rapid movement
- feeling unsteady after movement
Sensory Overload
What Does Sensory Overload Feel Like?
Sensory overload can look like:
- irritability that seems to appear suddenly
- difficulty thinking or speaking
- needing to escape
- covering your ears
- crying
- nausea
- headaches
- agitation
- inability to concentrate
- increased stimming
- shutting down
- becoming unusually quiet
- feeling physically trapped
- experiencing a meltdown
- needing significant recovery afterward
Sensory Seeking, Stimming & Self-Regulation
Not all sensory differences are about avoiding sensations.
Some nervous systems seek more input.
Examples:
- rocking
- pacing
- spinning
- rubbing textures
- listening to the same song repeatedly
- chewing
- bouncing
- pressure
- repetitive visual stimulation
- tapping
- vocal stimming
- playing with light
- smelling preferred objects
Stimming can serve many functions, including regulation, concentration, emotional expression, sensory seeking, enjoyment, and releasing energy. A Neuroaffirming approach asks what the behavior is doing for the person rather than automatically trying to eliminate it.
When Senses Cross
Synesthesia: When Sensory Experiences Cross
Synesthesia is a neurological phenomenon in which stimulation in one sensory or cognitive pathway automatically produces an additional experience in another. Someone might experience sounds as colors, words as tastes, touch as color, or another person’s touch as a sensation in their own body.
Then examples:
Chromesthesia: sound → color
Mirror-touch synesthesia: seeing touch → feeling touch
Lexical-gustatory: words → tastes
Grapheme-color: letters/numbers → colors
Auditory-tactile: sounds → physical sensations
Sensory Differences & OCD
When Sensory Experiences and OCD Intersect
Sensory experiences can become entangled with:
Just-Right OCD
Sensorimotor/Somatic OCD
Contamination OCD
Health OCD
Disgust-based OCD
Harm OCD
A sensory need is not automatically an OCD compulsion.
Someone avoiding a shirt because the fabric causes genuine sensory distress is different from someone avoiding it because OCD says something terrible could happen if they wear it.
Someone noticing their heartbeat intensely may have interoceptive sensitivity. Someone compulsively monitoring their heartbeat because they fear it indicates a medical catastrophe may be experiencing an OCD process.
And someone can experience both.
Understanding Your Sensory Profile
Your Sensory Needs Are Individual
There is no single “autistic sensory profile.” You may be highly sensitive in one sensory system and under-responsive in another. You may seek certain sensations while avoiding others. Your sensory capacity may also change depending on stress, sleep, illness, environment, masking, and how much your nervous system has already processed that day.
Understanding your sensory profile isn’t about making yourself tolerate more discomfort. It is about learning what your nervous system is communicating and finding accommodations, environments, and forms of regulation that help your body function more sustainably.
